Fifteen

It seemed to me that whatever a Margit was, it had something to do with the woman who lived in this small home. There was just an air of expectation, the kind of feeling Samantha would have whenever Mom would leave the house and we were waiting for her to come back. Something was supposed to happen but apparently it wasn’t happening, and it was all due to a Margit.

Perhaps the woman on the other side of the door in the kitchen could help us. Regardless, I didn’t like that a human was separated from the others in my care—I wanted all the people to be together.

Ben knelt down to look into my eyes.

“What are you smelling, Ripley? Do you smell somebody? Do you smell a person?”

I heard the question in his voice but didn’t know what he was asking. It did not seem that he was about to hand out a treat, so he wasn’t asking me to actually do anything … but he still had that air of expectation. He reached up and twisted the knob on the door and pulled it open.

“Ope!” he exclaimed, turning to give a startled look to Roxie. “It’s not a pantry, it’s some stairs. Wow. Really steep.”

He peered down the stairs into what smelled like a dank, damp room. The scent of the woman was stronger down there than it was up here.

“Margit?” he called.

There was no sound at all from down there.

I felt it very likely that we were all soon going to head down those stairs, so I decided to go first. The staircase was so steep it made me wonder if there would be a car stuck at the bottom. I placed my front feet carefully, and I could feel vibrations in the wooden steps as Ben and Roxie followed me.

At the bottom, I turned sharply in the direction where I could definitely smell the woman.

No cars, but there were stacks of boxes everywhere. They ran all the way to the ceiling, making for a very narrow corridor. I squeezed between them, confident that Ben and Roxie were right behind me. At a bend, my nose took me into an even tighter space, one which told me the woman lay just ahead.

When I found her she was sprawled out on the floor with her eyes closed. I sniffed curiously.

“Margit!” Roxie called in alarm.
